Celebrating 75 Years In Nevada County

Over the summer,  many branch members work in preparing activities for the upcoming year. I am working with the group reviewing the history of the Branch since its inception here  in 1937.  While much of the information is about the social activities and the contributions of the group to the community,  there are also tidbits that bring a smile....  in 1969-1970 the Branch members worked toward revising a  zoning ordinance.  They wanted to prevent piecemeal development,   and so over the year volunteers from the Branch worked with other community members to develop one that everyone could live with.  One of the headlines of that time  read, "Girls Are Dared to Draft Zoning Law in Nevada County".  Referring to those "women' as girls might not be considered 'politically correct'  in this day and age, but the history has many little anecdotes like these.  Their revision of the ordinance was a major part of the final law.

In another area, a rather curmudgeonly gentleman referred to the women of AAUW as "Pom-Pom girls", while someone else accused them of 'running Nevada County' .  Both of these interchanges noted in the bulletin of the day.

If you know any historical tidbits from AAUW's presence in Nevada County, please feel free to share ....

Another Successful Tech Trek

Eight girls from Nevada County recently returned from their one week experience at AAUW-CA's Tech Trek.  This program was started over ten years ago as an activity to encourage young girls to go into the STEM subjects - Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.  Our girls were fortunate to go to the inaugural session at UC-Davis this year.   One of our members, Martha Rees, served as a dorm mother. Although she did not have our girls in her group, she did see them throughout the week.  Some of her comments are on the Tech Trek page of the  AAUW Nevada County Branch website.

Each year the girls return with such enthusiasm and confidence; we are truly fortunate to be able to support this wonderful opportunity for them.

Celebrating 75 Years In Nevada County

The Nevada County branch of AAUW will be celebrating its 75th year of involvement in Nevada County. Various activities are being planned for next year.   At our first meeting on September 17th, members will be given a brief historical perspective of our earliest years.  Former members of the organization have made many contributions to the community. I learned today that they were instrumental in developing Meals on Wheels and the Gold Country Telecare  transportation program for those in need. These are just a couple of programs where our members provided research and funds for helping others in the area.

Be sure to keep checking to find out other places where the group found a need and filled it!

Summer Updates

As June races to its conclusion, even though meetings are not held,  many members have been involved in AAUW branch activities. New Board members have met to discuss the schedule for the coming year. Many ideas have been bandied around for our celebration of our 75th year in Nevada County. Standing Committee members received the Governance handbook which clears up any confusion about what we should or shouldn't be doing. Knowing the correct procedure for activities and our positions helps to have the organization run much more smoothly.

Part of the committee for the 75th celebration is researching historical facts about the beginnings of the branches involvement in Nevada County. They will be meeting periodically through the summer.

One group of members were delighted to help the ILP (Independent Living Program) celebrate the graduation of the Seniors in the group. The women provided  food for the festivities held at Seven Hills in Nevada City. There was enough food for seconds and then some!  Avery generous group of women!

One interest group has decided to continue through the summer. The Hiking Group will be having a wonderful outing in July when they plan a walk in the Fuller Lake/ Lake Spaulding area.

More next week!
